Fun times in the monkey cage

(I originally mistyped ‘monkey cafe’ in the subject line. That sounds so much nicer…)

From: FMG’s subterranean base (at an undisclosed location).

Hi all,

No rest for the wicked here at FMG. Mr. Joel finished his JEWELS release for October only to be be re-chained to his desk for our next product about THE RUINS OF MOR.

We’re really excited about this one. We hope to release the print and pdf versions simultaneously. It’s going to be a monster of a product. Look for it later this year (hopefully). Art is being commissioned and the final touches on the draft are being made now, but there’s still a lot to do.

In the meantime, we are in the process of trying to get another one of our “vintage” products out in print at Black Blade. Here’s a hint: It has robots.

Well, we’re about halfway through March here and things are still ticking along. The second installment of Mr. Joel’s “Bracol” series for Savage Worlds is rapidly approaching completion. This adventure takes it to the “Seasoned” level of PCs. It was a blast to playtest, even if my berserker died!

Speaking of playtesting, we’re partway through the playtest of what I hope will be the May release. It’s a Labyrinth Lord compatible module. Like the Bracol module, it’s for slightly more experienced PCs (5th level or so) and is pretty expansive. We’ll have to see how big it is by the time it’s been through revision and after Editrixie gets her hands on it.

Going into summer, there are some fun products like Ruins of Mor that I want to see get closer to done. We also have a massive sucker that’s been playtested under Savage Worlds, but we may release as “system-neutral.” It’s big enough that the editing process may take some time, though. It’s also fairly genre-neutral, but that’s about all I’ll say for now. (Hint: it’s got dinosaurs!)

It’s a real problem when so many creative ideas get tossed around the monkey cage that it’s hard to just focus on getting current projects done properly and out the door. Here’s a teaser for you though: the monkeys are working on a non-fantasy concept that we think is pretty cool. Still deciding about the best fit system-wise, though.

All right, that’s enough for now. Look for the next savage installment from Mr. Joel in a few weeks.

After a casual reply to a post over at Goblinoid Games’ Forums, I thought maybe I should elaborate on what I said.

One of the fun projects currently being hurled around the monkey cage is our concept for a stretch of eastern Valnwall in general, and the ruins of Mor in particular. Ruins of Mor is not a module, but a sandbox setting. We’ve been working on everything from descriptions and background for the region, NPCs and locales in and near the ruins. Special rules for races, character advancement, ready to run adventures, magic, the list goes on, and I wouldn’t want to spoil things too much. I think it’s fair to say Ruins of Mor goes well beyond most products out there right now. Don’t worry though, it’s still 100% Labyrinth Lord/AEC compatible! Even though we have several special options for creating and running PCs in and around the ruins, you can bring your existing characters to Mor without a fuss. The special rules are all modular, you can cherry-pick at will or use whole cloth.

Ruins of Mor is not “cookie-cutter” FRP. We’ve got a lot of flavor and fun details worked up to make the whole a living, breathing place with its own feel and style.

Our hope is to develop more of the area around Mor with future products, but that’s further down the line. Currently, Ruins of Mor is targeted to be released later this year, but I don’t think we can really pinpoint it yet. A lot’s been done, and some has even been playtested, but there’s a lot of good stuff to transcribe from bar napkins and beat into shape. Editrixie is going to kill us when the draft is finally dropped in her lap.

Well, that’s probably about all the non-spoilery I can’t get away with for now.
